Insulating Raised Floors

Insulating raised floors, like those found in crawlspaces, not only helps to keep the heat in the living area, but can provide heat transfer protection to pipes as well as heating and cooling ducts. In vented crawlspaces it is oftentimes more cost-effective to insulate between the floor joists than it is to insulate the foundation walls. If the choice has been made to insulate between the floor joists in the crawlspace, the process can be pretty quick and easy, but care must be taken to make sure the insulation is secured properly and the venting strategy of the zone is respected.

After completing this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Understand the relative importance of insulating raised floors
  • Choose the best materials to use
  • Know how to insulate raised floors
  • Comprehend the importance of proper air sealing and vapor barriers prior to installation
