Weatherizing Roofs and Walls

Most mobile homes have inadequate attic insulation, making roofs a high priority for energy efficiency improvement. This lesson covers common steps for weatherizing roofs. Although steps can also be taken to improve the energy efficiency of walls, the wall cavity in most mobile homes is already full of insulation, making walls a lower priority for energy efficiency improvement, particularly in warmer climates.

After completing this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Recognize different mobile home roof structures, and understand how the weatherization techniques vary for each type
  • Utilize important safety measures when working on a roof
  • Add insulation to a roof cavity from a gable end, from the roof deck itself, or by doing a rim blow
  • Review the important steps in patching a roof
  • Evaluate the need for roof cavity ventilation
  • Understand the most common methods used to insulate a wall cavity
