Weatherizing the Underbelly

The underbelly of a mobile home provides support for and protects insulation, ductwork, and pipes. It also shields the underfloor systems from damage if the mobile home is ever moved. Here, we explore repair measures of the bellyboard or bellywrap, as well as the proper techniques for underbelly weatherization measures.

After completing this lesson, students will understand how to:

  • Explain how to patch the underbelly material to protect the underfloor cavity and hold the insulation close to the floor
  • Identify the floor penetrations that must be sealed to prevent air leaks
  • Describe how to protect exposed water pipes from freezing and the underfloor cavity from moisture
  • Explain how to insulate the underfloor
  • Evaluate the need for ventilation to prevent moisture problems
