Leak-Testing Air Barriers

Testing air barriers happens during the blower door test, and if done properly can help the crew chief avoid unnecessary work in hard to reach areas. Air barrier testing uses the manometer to measure pressure differences between zones in the home to estimate air leakage. Unlike simple zone testing, leak-testing air barriers can be a little more complicated and requires a good understanding of pressure differences.

At the conclusion of this lesson, crew chiefs will be able to:

  • Explain what air barriers are and their purpose
  • Understand what an intermediate zone is and its significance in air-sealing a home
  • Describe what's involved in testing the relative airtightness of air barriers
