Assessing Building Moisture

As part of the home assessment, an auditor will be looking for moisture in the house. Moisture that leaks into a building is always a problem, but other bad effects occur when excessive moisture that is generated inside the building (from bathing, cooking, etc.) can't get out of the building. Moisture control and ventilation go hand in hand in achieving a healthy home.

After completing this lesson, auditors will be able to:

  • Explain how moisture gets into a home
  • Describe how moisture is generated inside a home
  • Identify the negative effects of excessive moisture in a home
  • Understand the importance of ventilation for controlling moisture
