Base Load Metering

In many homes there is a significant opportunity to save energy by addressing the year-round uses of electricity. In fact, reducing electric baseload can sometimes be more cost effective than measures geared to cutting the cost of heating and/or cooling. Using a combination of visual inspection, nameplate information, diagnostic tools, charts, and calculation shortcuts, we will explore and analyze opportunities to reduce the amount of electricity used by the home on a daily basis.

After completing this lesson, auditors will be able to:

  • Explain the concept of baseload metering
  • Know how to differentiate between baseload and seasonal energy use
  • Perform basic calculations that evaluate baseload metering
  • Evaluate options and prioritize actions to reduce energy use within the home
